The Houston problem: why walls fail here
Houston's clay (often called gumbo or Beaumont-type expansive soil) takes on water after a Gulf storm or long wet spell and expands. That creates lateral and hydrostatic pressure against the back of any retaining face. When the weather turns dry, the same soil shrinks and can pull away from the wall. Cycle after cycle, a wall with a shallow footer, no reinforcement, and no drainage path starts to lean, bow, crack, or push soil through the face. Common failure patterns we see: A stacked garden border that was never meant to hold real height or surcharge Missing or clogged drainage behind the wall (the leading cause of failure on Houston clay) Inadequate base preparation or footer depth for the soil movement No geogrid or reinforcement when height or load requires it Water from roofs, walks, or upslope collecting behind the face with nowhere to go A leaning or bowing wall is not just cosmetic. It can threaten usable lot space, nearby walks, or (in higher walls) adjacent structures. Repair or replacement decisions start with an on-site look at the soil, the slope, the existing drainage, and any surcharge above the wall.
What a proper retaining wall does on Houston lots
A retaining wall holds grade so a slope becomes a usable terrace, protects against erosion, and creates level pads for living space. On Houston clay the wall itself must be designed as a system: Footer and base: We excavate and compact a stable base, then set a footer sized for the soil and the height. Expansive clay does not forgive a shallow or poorly compacted foundation. Drainage envelope: Gravel backfill, filter fabric, perforated pipe at the base, and weeps (where appropriate) keep water from stacking up behind the face. This is structural, not optional. A lot-wide French drain is a separate job — see French drains. Surface catch basins live on catch basins. Reinforcement: For many walls above low decorative height, geogrid layers tie the wall mass into the retained soil. Segmental systems gain flexibility from the grid; poured concrete walls use different detailing. We decide on site from height, surcharge, and soil conditions. Face and cap: Segmental concrete block is often the practical choice for Houston clay because the units can accommodate slight movement without cracking like rigid mortared walls. Natural stone and poured concrete are options when the design calls for them. Timber is a humidity and longevity conversation, not a default for structural walls here. Low brick is usually decorative rather than structural. Stone craft detail lives on stone masonry. Poured craft detail lives on concrete masonry. The living surface above or in front of the wall (patio, walk, steps) is hardscapes or outdoor steps. A pure regrade without a wall is grading and resloping.
How we approach the job
We treat the wall as a design-build system matched to the lot, not a generic stack. Site walk — We look at slope, clay behavior, existing drainage, surcharge (drive, structure, or steep fill above), utilities, HOA or setback rules, and access. Design and quote — You receive 2D/3D visuals where they help and a clear itemized quote before any excavation. We flag when height or load may need City of Houston plan review. Build — Excavate and compact the base, set the footer, install drainage components, place and reinforce the courses, backfill with free-draining material, cap, and restore grade and plantings as agreed. Walkthrough — We review the finished wall with you so you understand the drainage path and any maintenance notes. We do not send water onto a neighbor's lot. We do not claim a PE stamp we do not have. Permit and HOA conversations are part of the site visit when they apply.
Local considerations
Height and surcharge can trigger plan check with the City of Houston. We will tell you when the wall needs that conversation. Verify current rules with the Houston Permitting Center; we do not publish a cutoff number. HOA and setbacks are checked on the walk. Many Houston neighborhoods require Architectural Control Committee approval for walls. Drainage coordination matters. A wall without an outlet path for the water it intercepts will eventually fail. Roof leaders and surface water are routed properly; larger drainage is handed off to the drainage silo when needed. Weather windows — Clay is easier to work when moisture is manageable. We plan around conditions rather than forcing a dig in saturated gumbo.
