Hardscape installation for Houston patios and living spaces overview

A patio or outdoor living surface on Houston clay only lasts if the base and the water under it are handled correctly. Skip the base prep or the drainage path and the surface heaves, settles, or traps water after the next Gulf storm. If you need a hardscape you can actually use after the clay gets wet, start here.
Danny's Landscaping installs patio hardscape and outdoor living hardscape for Houston conditions. We compact a stable base, plan drainage under the surface, and set a finish that holds. We do not sell outdoor kitchens, patio covers, or pools.

The Houston problem: why hardscapes fail here
Houston clay expands when wet and shrinks when dry. A hardscape installed on poorly prepared or poorly drained clay moves with that cycle. Common results: Heaving or settling of pavers and slabs after wet-dry seasons Water trapped under or on the surface after sudden rain Edges that crack or spread because the base was never compacted for expansive soil A surface that looked finished the first week but becomes unusable after the first heavy storm cycle The living surface (patio, seating pad, walkable outdoor room) is only as good as the base and the path water takes under and around it. Lot-wide drainage systems live on the drainage silo. This page is the install of the hard living surface itself.
What hardscape installation includes on Houston lots
Hardscape installation Houston outdoor living means a patio or sitting/walking surface engineered for the soil under it. Base preparation: We excavate and compact a base suited to Houston clay so the surface has a stable platform. Thickness and materials are chosen for the expected load and the soil conditions on site. Drainage under and around the hardscape: Water must have a path. We grade and detail so water moves away from the surface and does not pond under the finish. Full French-drain or catch-basin systems for the rest of the lot are separate — see drainage and its children. A hardscape without under-surface drainage planning is a future problem on clay. Finish options: Pavers, concrete, and related surfaces are selected after we see the use, the clay, access, and design goals. The goal is a surface you can walk and sit on after rain, not just a photo-ready install. Driveway or long walkway paving lives on driveway or walkway paving. Stone and concrete craft details that are more masonry than living-surface hardscape live on their own pages. Integration: A patio often sits against a retaining wall, steps, or planted edge. We coordinate so the hardscape and the grade work together. Retaining walls are retaining walls. Steps are outdoor steps. Planted edges and walks that are more landscape than hard surface are walkway landscaping. We do not sell outdoor kitchens or patio covers.
How we approach the job
Site walk — Slope, clay, intended use, access, existing drainage, HOA or setback notes, and how the hardscape will connect to the rest of the lot. Design and quote — 2D/3D where helpful and a clear itemized quote before excavation. Finish and base decisions are made with the soil and drainage in mind. Install — Excavate and compact the base, set drainage details under/around the surface, place the finish, and restore adjacent grade and plantings as agreed. Walkthrough — We review the finished surface with you so you understand drainage paths and any care notes.
Local considerations
Clay and moisture drive base depth and drainage detailing more than in sandy soils. We plan for movement and water, not against them. HOA and setbacks are checked on the walk when they apply. Weather windows matter. Saturated clay is harder to compact correctly; we work when conditions allow proper base work. Adjacent systems — If the lot has standing water or a slope problem, we flag the need for grading and resloping or drainage work so the hardscape is not fighting the lot.
